Dealing with Family Memberships, Lessons Learnt

In many clubs, family memberships are a single fee, based on the number of people in the family.

Except for a single membership for everyone, this is the easiest way to deal with families. However, there are some essential things to consider while working out your family membership;

- How many people to include in large families
- Family membership pricing
- What constitutes a family to your club? Are couples included?
- How do you identify that signup is, in fact, a family and not a group of friends?
- Age cutoff to move to a single membership


You can address these items, and when set up correctly, management of your families is easy and requires only minimal monitoring. You must highlight the terms before signup, and your potential members will meet the necessary checks.

Many clubs use a premise that the Medicare card includes everyone in the family. For mixed families, it might be a requirement to provide both parent's Medicare cards.

Also, you need to monitor the number of adults (over 18), and their designation (parent), this is usually handled by exception reports that highlight problems.

It's essential you have a cut off for age determined and clearly stated, for example, if the cut off for being part of a family for a child is 18, then after they turn 18 are they removed from the membership or are they removed after the membership expires for that year?
